This week in math, we'll be focusing on using a variety of strategies to solve 2-digit addition problems. It is important that our students try to use the different strategies, then determine which will work best for them. We are NOT teaching students the traditional algorithm of carrying and regrouping. We'd like them to build a deeper understanding of the concept through the use of some of the strategies listed below:
Example problem: 47 + 35
Number line- Start at 47 than skip count 3 tens and a five
tens + tens, ones+ ones
40 + 30 = 70
7 + 5 = 12
70 +12 = 82
Ask your children to share some of the new strategies that they've learned!

This week in math we'll be discussing strategies for subtracting numbers within 20. The goal is for students to be able to use these strategies to mentally subtract numbers within 20. One of the strategies we'll be working on this week is using a number line to subtract smaller numbers. We will then be using the number line again later in the week to add two digit numbers.
We'll be using a 'Diffy' board to practice our subtraction facts. Here is a link to an online version of the board ... Continue reading...

This week in math, we'll be starting by reviewing the students' knowledge of odds and evens. It's not enough for students to be able to identify a number as odd or even, because they'll need to be able to explain WHY that number is odd or even.
From there, we'll be moving on to learning some strategies to help students build their capacity to mentally add numbers within 20. We'll be starting by studying doubles facts, and using those facts to learn near doubles facts.
For example: 5 + 5 = ... Continue reading...
