Math: Q2 Week 1
Posted by Jessica Shevitz on Wednesday, November 7, 2012
This week in math, we'll be starting by reviewing the students' knowledge of odds and evens. It's not enough for students to be able to identify a number as odd or even, because they'll need to be able to explain WHY that number is odd or even.
From there, we'll be moving on to learning some strategies to help students build their capacity to mentally add numbers within 20. We'll be starting by studying doubles facts, and using those facts to learn near doubles facts.
For example: 5 + 5 = 10 is a doubles fact.
If you know 5+5=10 then you know that 5+4=9 and 5+6=11. These are examples of near doubles facts.
Knowing these strategies will help our students add numbers within 20 which will then help them when it comes time to mentally add larger numbers!
